Gary Leonard Ackerman is a retired American Democraty Party politician. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York, from 1983 to 2013. In March 2012, Ackerman announced about his retirement. He started as a teacher and later left his teaching job to start a weekly community newspaper, 'The Flushing Tribune,' which later became the 'Queens Tribune.' He served as a member of the New York State Senate from 1979 to 1983. Ackerman was elected to the House of Representatives in 1983.
