Romain Gary was an acclaimed French novelist, film director, and diplomat. He was an aviator who served the French Air Force and also won many bravery honors and medals. After getting injured he worked as a French diplomat to Bulgaria and Switzerland and wrote novels in his leisure time. His first novel ‘Forest of Anger’ gave him instant fame and marked the start of his prolific writing career. His novel ‘Les racines du ciel’ (The Roots of Heaven) failed to achieve success in France but was a best-seller in the U.S and was awarded the ‘Prix Goncourt’ by the ‘Academic Goncourt’. This made him  shift to the U.S to become a full-time writer. He was known for using various pseudonyms and wrote more than fifty novels under four different names. He also directed two movies and wrote the script for two movies based on his novels. Although he was successful as a writer, he is believed to be unhappy with his life and committed suicide.
