Brown had a tough childhood and was declared ‘mentally retarded’ by his school authorities; however, the woman who had adopted him along with a teacher helped him with his education. Brown’s professional life started with a stint at a radio station and after he had been laid off by the radio station, he decided to get into politics. He served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives for 6 years between 1977 and 1983, before going into television. After working across several networks, Brown eventually ended up with a contract with PBS as a motivational speaker and that is when he became extremely popular due to his speeches.
