Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an American scientist, who specialised in theoretical physics and is particularly famous for having been one of the leaders of the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was a professor at the University of California at Berkely before his expertise was recognised and he was put in charge of the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer’s personal views in relation to the atomic bomb are largely spiritual in nature and in fact he quoted from the Bhagwad Gita when asked about it. However, later on, when he headed the United States Atomic Energy Commission, he strived to ensure that a nuclear arms race with the Russians was avoided at all costs. Other than that, Oppenheimer is well known for developing the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the Oppenheimer-Phillips process in relation to nuclear fusion. He is without doubt one of the most important figures in history and although he did not have a hugely public profile, he spoke on subjects close to his heart from time to time.
