Charles Alston was a distinguished Afro-American sculptor, teacher, muralist, illustrator and painter. In 1970s he created the sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. for which he was much appreciated and the same was put in the White House in 1990. The 20th century Civil Rights Movement had a great influence on the renowned artist. In order to express racial unity he created a number of works in just black and white.
