He was one of the most important military and political leaders of the 19th-century Britain, and twice served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. By defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo (1815), he became one of Britain's top military heroes. In a 2002 BBC poll of 100 greatest Britons, he was at number 15. He was born in Dublin into a aristocratic protestant family and served in the British Army in British India and in the Napoleonic Wars.
