Havelock Ellis was a renowned physician and psychologist known to be the co-author of the first known book on Homosexuality. During his early days, he got inspired by writer James Hinton and his writings on topics of religion, society, and sex to pursue a career in medical education which would help him do a detailed study of these topics. His debut book was titled ‘The New Spirit’ which aimed at discussing the sciences of anthropology, sociology, politics and feminism; this book turned out to be a success. This encouraged him to co-write the most notable work of his life titled ‘Sexual Inversion’ which created a lot of controversy for its subject of Homosexuality. This was followed by a book titled ‘Erotic Symbolism, The Mechanism of Detumescence’ which described his views on undinism. He further researched on autoeroticism and psychoanalysis and made significant contributions in the field. He was known to be the first researcher to differentiate between transgender and homosexuality. He collaborated with various intellectuals to study Eugenics and also served as the vice-president of the ‘Eugenics Education Society’.
